Microsooft HoloLens expands the paint manufacturer Bergolin’s real-world workspace - Yaevon and daenet process production orders in “mixed reality” in real time

Bergolin is a medium-sized paint manufacturer that is embracing the challenges and opportunities of digitalization. As part of a pilot project, the Microsoft HoloLens is being used for the first time in production-logistics processes at the paint manufacturer.

“It’s important to me that all processes in the company are reported in real time. That’s the only way we can reach industry 4.0 in production and logistics,” said Christoph Heinen, Head of IT and Controlling at Bergolin. Because the production staff wear heavy chemical-resistant gloves, they previously had to remove them before entering feedback into the industry terminal. These terminals were also only located in specific places in the production facilities. “This leads to staff trying to enter all the reports together in the system after they have finished working with the chemicals.”

With the HoloLens, the production facility is virtually equipped with mobile terminals and 3D touchpoints, which can be located anywhere in the room and can move along with the user if necessary. Simple gesture control is possible even with heavy gloves. That means nothing stands in the way now of recording all processes in real time. Because the HoloLens does not present an enclosed space but displays information in the real-world environment like a heads-up display in a car, you do not need any new processes, and it is easy to orient oneself during production.

In a joint project, Yaveon and daenet brought the dialog for production orders out of Microsoft Dynamics NAV and the Yaveon Probatch industry solution into the virtual space of mixed reality. A universal dialog in the HoloLens is planned for the future for logistics processes for Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Yaveon Probatch with Windows 10.

Andreas Erben, HoloLens specialist (Microsoft MVP Emerging Experiences) at daenet is aware of the opportunities that come from using the Microsoft HoloLens: “Previously it wasn’t possible to interact dynamically with a 3D model of a room generated in real time. We’re happy to have added a new application to the existing range of applications in a practical test.”

Marcus Kotsch, Project and Portfolio Manger at Yaveon sees an important innovation here that will benefit many of Yaveon’s customers: “The possibilities in mixed reality for constantly displaying information based on the object, process and location and for enabling input at any location represent significant flexibility in processes.”

Gaining experience in real operations

Bergolin, daenet and Yaveon have agreed to respond to issues of occupational safety, ergonomics and process efficiency in an extended field test of several HoloLens workplaces with guidance from scientists. “It’s important for us to approach using this technology in industrial environments with the necessary care. We’re happy to include hardware partners in this experiment, who can help us answer questions about ex-protection and occupational safety,” said Marcus Kotsch.
